Astaxanthin is a carotenoid created by micro-algae (Haematococcus pluvialis) in times of stress. When the Haematococcus pluvialis algae are exposed to change in their environment such as direct sunlight, starved of food or being eaten, it produces astaxanthin to protect itself. As a potent antioxidant, astaxanthin protects the algae from free radicals and oxidative stress, keeping it alive and well when stressed. This carotenoid is what gives many sea creatures such as salmon, krill, and crayfish their red colour. Unlike many other antioxidant supplements, astaxanthin does not develop into a pro-oxidant once exhausted.

Astaxanthin has been consumed in seafood in small doses throughout history but only recently have we been able to reap the benefits through high dose supplementation.

Natural astaxanthin is sold all around the world as a natural antioxidant supplement. Exceeding the antioxidant power of the well-researched lutein and zeaxanthin, astaxanthin has been claimed to aid eye health, support heart health, improve skin quality and reduce inflammation throughout the body.

Astaxanthin is found in its highest natural concentration in wild Pacific sockeye salmon. It is also found in krill, algae, red trout, shrimp, crab, and lobster. Its vibrant red pigmentation is what helps give these marine animals and plants their intense coloring.

As the discovery of astaxanthin for human benefit is relatively new, the majority of trials have been conducted on animals with human research growing.
Approach of Achieving
1. Crushed shrimp to extract, content is too low about 80-200ppm, adding water of feed is too much.
2. It is synthetic by labour, 50000-80000ppm, currently the companies achieved this synthesis are seldom, mainly include Roche and BASF and other international giants.
3. Red yeast fermentation method, 3R, 3’R structure, 800-4000ppm, but only Igene and ADM companies can produce.
4. Haematococcus farming method, 3S, 3’S structure, 15000-40000ppm, there are mainly BioReal (Sweden) AB, Aquasearch and Cyanotech Companies. The product is closest to the natural astaxanthin. The bioavailability is highest, risk minimization.
5. Plant culture method, astaxanthin content of trained product is up to 1.6%.
6. Approach of achieving by biological, extract pluvialis algae, uses liquid carbon dioxide, supercritical way, is the most effective way to extract.

The global astaxanthin output was more than 250 tons in 2015, and is expected to reach 340 tons by 2020, growing at a CAGR of 6.6% from 2016 to 2020. In terms of region, North America is the main production region, accounts for more than 30% of the installed capacity. Based on the applications, aquafeed occupied the largest market share in 2015, accounted for about 40%, and will continue to maintain in the coming period, this is due to the growing demand for fish.
