“The ever increasing population growth rate across the globe along with the rise in calorie intake per capita has fueled the demand for food grains. With the advent of new agricultural technologies, the crop production in the world has grown sharply. The significant contribution to this rise is attributed to the large scale induction of pesticides in pre-harvesting crop growth process and post-harvesting storage techniques.

Bio-Pesticides according to Environmental Protection Agency, USA are defined as pesticides derived from natural entities like virus, bacteria, animals, plants etc. As of 2013 there are about 400 registered bio-pesticide active ingredients with more than 1250 registered bio-pesticide products. The bio-pesticide is mainly divided into three classes: biochemical pesticides that are naturally occurring substances that control pests by non-toxic mechanisms, microbial pesticides consisting of micro-organisms as active ingredients and plant incorporated protectant pesticides are produced from plants through a genetic material added into them.

Chemical or Synthetic Pesticides are the predominant pesticides used excessively for crop protection. The chief pesticides used are categorized into fungicides, herbicides and insecticides. Apart from these categories, pesticides used for preservation of crops are classified into rodenticides, fumigants, nematicides etc. Each of the pesticide segmented above are based on the type of pest they control, for ex: herbicides are intended to kill unwanted plants or weeds, fungicides for protection from fungus or fungal spores while insecticides control insects’ larvae and eggs.

The current report provides a global insight over the pesticide involvement in the crop protection. The pesticides used for the protection of crops can be ascribed to two salient categories i.e. Bio-Pesticides and Chemical or Synthetic Pesticides.”
