Ammonium carbonate is a salt with the chemical formula (NH4)2CO3. Ammonium carbonate is also known as baker’s ammonia, and hartshorn, is a leavening agent that is sometimes used for flat, baked goods. Ammonium carbonate is the predecessor to the more modern leavening agent baking soda and baking powder. It is also the main component in smelling salts. Additionally, it is used as an emetic and an active ingredient in some cough syrups designed to relieve the symptoms of bronchitis. It is also used as an ingredient in some smokeless tobacco products. In China, ammonium carbonate is mainly used for fertilizer and explosives.
