3D printing involves the creation of a 3 dimensional object by adding successive layers oa particular material one on top of each other until the overall object has been formed. 3D printing has come a long way since the initial years of experimentation. With the success of the printing of a number of devices, 3D printers are now being looked upon for military applications. The biggest advantage which a 3D printer provides is that it can print a 3D object anywhere. For military applications, the specifications for a weapon or any critical device can be sent online to a 3D printer in a war zone and the product can be printed there. 3D printers can also bring down the cost of logistics considerably across numerous industries. There would be no need for transporting any products as such but rather, just transmitting the specifications of a particular product and the product can just be printed directly at the destination itself. In this aspect, the healthcare industry has also started looking at the use of 3D printers for the printing of medical devices. 3D printers can be used to print medical devices which are unique to a patient. For example, in case there is a tumor in an area which cannot be reached by standard medical devices, a customized medical device can be printed in no time so that the tumor can now be removed.

3D printing of medical devices has also been recognized by the FDA and as of date, there are close to 100 medical devices which have been approved or being printed. As such, the market is expected to grow to more than $2 billion by 2020.
