Stevia Extract Takes the Largest Proportion in the Exports of Plant Extracts in China

“The natural and low-sugar sweeteners gradually stand out in China鈥檚 sweetener industry. As the foreign consumers increase the demand for natural and healthy food and healthcare products, the natural sweetener mogroside mix and stevia sweetener are favoured by the downstream. 

Specifically, stevia extract takes the largest proportion in the exports of plant extracts. In China, consumers also begin to show discontentment with soft drinks such as tea drink with high sugar content. Hopefully, the HIS consumption will be expanded in China.

Still, there are problems in China鈥檚 sweetener market. The over-expansion in production capacity captures attention, especially that for HIS. Accordingly, the overcapacity has led to price competition amongst the enterprises, and further to the anti-dumping investigation against the 4 HIS, including saccharin, cyclamate, aspartame and acesulfame-K. Now the other mainstream sweetener, sucralose is also at risk. Though the leader JK Sucralose seemed to be conscious about the risk, and had clear intention to stabilise and even increase the export price, it is uncertain about the price trend in the future.

The changes in government policies are beneficial to the industry development. From 1 Oct., the Food Safety Law will be officially implemented, in which the production of food additives including sweeteners is required to go through the food production licensing procedure. Meanwhile, the Administrative Measures for Food Production Licensing carried out to support the law, also stipulates for the obtainment of the food production license in the legalised production. In addition, Yunnan, Guangdong and Hainan will lift the price control on sugarcane from 2015/16 extracting season, and the price will decided by the market.”
