A Semiconductor IP core or IP block is a reusable and licensable unit of either logic, chip layout design, cell. The licensee of the IP core pays an agreed amount to the licensor on sale of product or other mutually agreed upon terms. Chip designers use huge chunks of semiconductor IP cores and functional blocks and construct new chips by modifying and improvising on earlier chip designs. Often more than 15 IP blocks are combined in one chip to create Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs), Application Specific Standard Products (ASSPs), and complete, (SoCs). These, in turn, are used in various electronic units of innumerable number of end user applications in various application sectors such as mobile phones, smart phones, television desktop boxes, set-top boxes, digital cameras, MP3 players, automobile electronics, smart cards, hearing aids, heart monitors, and essentially anything that uses or processes information and data.
