“â¢ The Honorable Supreme Court of India lifted the ban on iron ore mining in the state of Karnataka on April 18, 2013 and mining operations resumed in 19 mines. The ban on mining in Goa was removed on April 21, 2014, with an interim cap on production from the mining leases in the state to 20Mt per annum.
â¢ Indian iron ore consumption measured 121.6Mt in 2014, up by 10% over 2013, with 97.6% of the iron ore consumed by the domestic steel industry.
â¢ The Indiaâs mining industry is governed by the Ministry of Mines, the Indian Bureau of Mines (IBM) and the Geological Survey of India (GSI). The Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Act 2015 and the Mines Act 1952, together with the rules and regulations framed under them, constitute the basic laws governing the Indian mining sector.”
