Iran Will Be the Sixth Largest Telecom Services Market in AME in 2015

Date: 2015-10-29

Over the next five years, Pyramid Research expects Iran’s total telecoms market revenue to grow at a CAGR of 0.8% in dollar terms and 3.7% on a local currency basis. The key drivers of growth will be mobile data and fixed broadband internet. Mobile data will be driven by the expansion of 3G networks by the main mobile operators, as well as an increasing focus on 4G, which was first introduced into the market in late 2014. Fixed broadband will, in particular, benefit from the rollout of FTTx networks and the revocation of a regulatory cap on home broadband speeds.

Key Findings
– In 2015, Iran will be the sixth largest telecom services market in AME, with estimated revenue of $6.4bn (or 1.6% of GDP), a 1.5% decrease on the previous year due to the volatility of the rial. Pyramid Research expects to see overall service revenue grow at a 0.8% CAGR from 2015 to 2020.

– The mobile voice segment is the largest revenue generator, contributing 41% of total revenue. We expect mobile data revenue to expand at a CAGR of 4.7% in dollar terms or 7.7% in local currency to reach $2.0bn by 2020.

– Adoption of 3G technologies is at 16.6% of the mobile subscription base; we expect 3G subscriptions to grow at a CAGR of 21.9% to reach 38.2% of all subscriptions by 2020.

– Adoption of 4G technologies in the next five years will highly depend on the introduction of 4G services by MCI, and the availability and price of compatible devices.

– In 2015 broadband penetration will reach 9.1% of the population, and we expect it to reach 15.6% by 2020.
