Global Zinc-Air Batteries Market is projected to reach over USD 0.5 billion by 2020

Date: 2016-09-12

Zinc–air batteries and zinc–air fuel cells (mechanically rechargeable) are metal-air batteries powered by oxidizing zinc with oxygen from the air. These batteries have high energy densities and are relatively inexpensive to produce. Sizes range from very small button cells for hearing aids, larger batteries used in film cameras that previously used mercury batteries, to very large batteries used for electric vehicle propulsion.

Zinc–air batteries have some properties of fuel cells as well as batteries: the zinc is the fuel, the reaction rate can be controlled by varying the air flow, and oxidized zinc/electrolyte paste can be replaced with fresh paste.

Zinc-air batteries can be used to replace now discontinued 1.35 V mercury batteries (although with a significantly shorter operating life), which in the 1970s through 1980s were commonly used in photo cameras.

Possible future applications of this battery include its deployment as an electric vehicle battery and as a utility-scale energy storage system.

Currently there are four types on the market of zinc-air batteries, Medium-sized zinc-air battery, Button-type zinc-air battery, Low power load capacity zinc air wet battery, High power zinc-air battery. The quantity of electric charge of large zinc-air battery is generally 500-2000Ah, is mainly used for beacon device of railway and navigation. The quantity of electric charge of button-type zinc-air battery is between 200 and 400mAh, and has been widely used in the hearing aid.

Global Zinc-Air Batteries Market Size, Growth Rate (%) and Market Sales ($ Million), by types, 2020

Medium-sized zinc-air battery→                      Button-type zinc-air battery→
Low power load capacity zinc air wet battery→          High power zinc-air battery→

The global zinc-air batteries market is projected to reach over USD 0.5 billion by 2020, growing at a CAGR of 6.83% from 2016 to 2020. By the regions, Zinc-air batteries in Europe and North America and other developed countries has been quite mature, there will be a steady growth, Asia-Pacific will be the fastest growing market of zinc-air battery.

With social progress and development of science and technology, the demand of zinc-air battery is getting bigger, so many businesses are optimistic about the market prospects, and are all engaged in this industry. Some of the major competitor are Duracell International (USA), Electric Fuel Battery (USA), Energizer Holdings (USA), Powerzinc Electric (USA), Spectrum Brands (USA), Rayovac (USA), VARTA Microbattery GmbH (Germany), VARTA Consumer Batteries GmbH & Co. KGaA (Germany), Philips UK (UK), Renata SA (Switzerland), Toshiba Battery Co. Ltd. (Japan), GP Batteries International Limited (Singapore), Sony Electronics Asia Pacific Pte. Ltd. (Singapore), ZeniPower (Zhuhai Zhi Li) Battery Co., Ltd (China).
