Global Plating on Plastics (POP) Market Expected To Reach $ 588.2 Million By 2021 With A CAGR Of 7.28%

Date: 2017-06-26

Plating on plastics (POP) refers to the application of metal onto plastic surfaces by electroplating. Plastics are plated with metals such as chromium and nickel to give them the luster expected of metal surfaces and enhance features such as corrosion resistance, abrasion resistance, toughness, and ease of cleaning.

The global Plating on Plastics (POP) market was estimated at USD$ 413.6 Million in 2016, and is anticipated to reach USD$ 588.2 Million by 2021, expanding at a CAGR of 7.28% between 2017 and 2021. Plating ability has an inverse relation with the chemical resistance of the polymer substrate, which means higher the chemical resistance, the more difficult it is to plate. Thus, manufacturers prefer ABS for plating. ABS was estimated as the largest plastic category in 2016 and is expected to grow substantially over the forecast period. Other popular plastic types include ABS/PC, PBT, PEEK and others.

The automotive industry in North America and Europe was the pioneer to implement nickel and chromium coating on plastic resins on a commercial level. Properties such as lower cost, weight reduction and aesthetic designs enabled huge applications across the automotive industry. It is widely used in window trims, interior trim, mirror housings, auxiliary lamps, radiator grills, name badges and front and rear lamps.

Europe dominated the overall market in terms of revenue followed by North America. Europe is majorly driven by automotive industry in UK and Germany. Chrome finished automotive have attained considerable popularity in Europe and North America. The region is witnessing rising environmental regulations which has led higher demand for lighter aerodynamic cars. Auto giants such as BMW, Volvo, Volkwagen, Diamer AG and others are likely to drive the demand for the overall market in future.

Asia Pacific is expected to register the fastest CAGR of 8.2% during the forecast period. Growing automotive and electronics manufacturing industries in China, India and Japan are expected to drive the growth over coming years. The component and equipment capabilities are advancing in this region due to rapidly developing industrial infrastructure, thereby, creating lucrative opportunities for growth by 2021.

Some of the major companies in the market are Applegate, Helco Metal, Sarrel Group, Thanh Luan, Trenton, Bolta Werke, Chromal, BEP Surface Technology, and Xinpoint.
