Muscone is an oily, very slightly water-soluble, large cyclic ketone containing a 15-membered ring, C 1 6 H 3 0 O, obtained from musk, and it is used in the perfume industry.

Muscone is the main component of musk, now can be artificially synthesized. Natural muscone is the levo form, and synthetic muscone is generally dextrorotatory form. Muscone is mainly used in soap and cosmetics blending. Furthermore muscone is also an agricultural herbicide, can be effectively used to control weeds in rice.

The synthesis of muscone includes three strides, Alkylation, Acetylation and Nitrification.

Muscone is a largest production and sales variety during three varieties of synthetic nitro – musk (musk xylene, musk ambrette, musk ketone). Study abroad began in the 1940s, industrial production began in the early 1950s, currently about ten countries produce in the world, wherein the output of Western Europe is largest, and consumption of North America is largest, accounting for about half the world’s total consumption followed by Japan. World production was more than 5000 tons in 2014, and is expected to grow at a CAGR of about 4.0% from 2015 to 2019. By Asia-Pacific, with the improvement of people’s living standards and changes in consumption structure, consumption of soap and cosmetics soared, the consumption of synthetic musks are also bound to surge, this has greatly promoted the development of muscone.
