Global Diesel Exhaust Fluid (AdBlue) Market Will Grow At A CAGR of 5.7% Between 2016-2020

Date: 2016-10-13

Diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) is an aqueous urea solution made with 32.5% urea and 67.5% deionized water. It is standardised as AUS 32 (aqueous urea solution) in ISO 22241. DEF is used as a consumable in selective catalytic reduction (SCR) in order to lower NOx concentration in the diesel exhaust emissions from diesel engines.

The German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) registered the trademark AdBlue for AUS 32.

Since the U.S. Environment Protection Agency (EPA) unveiled stringent emission standards in 2010, which prompted the entire medium and heavy-duty truck market to deploy SCR. Most manufacturers wasted no time and immediately implemented the technology into their products. As of November 2014, almost all new trucks and buses in North America are SCR-equipped, and therefore require DEF.

According to research, the global Diesel Exhaust Fluid (AdBlue) Market is expected to register a CAGR of 5.7% over 2016-2020, as pickup trucks, Sport Utility Vehicles (SUV) models and other diesel passenger cars and light-duty commercial vehicles are increasingly taking up SCR, meaning that the requirement for DEF across these sectors is also rising. The diesel market for passenger cars in North America is still marginal compared to gasoline engines, but rapidly expanding, as diesel cars allow better fuel savings and as public opinion towards diesel turns more positive.

Geographically, the North America is expecting to reach 1.1 Billion Gallon by 2020, which will be largest market for Diesel Exhaust Fluid (AdBlue), the region followed by Europe, and the Asia Pacific is expecting to grow at a highest CAGR of 7.8% over the forecast period.
