Chinese Producers Held 46% Global Market Share in Electrolyte

Date: 2015-08-29

Chinese battery material makers have gradually taken over domination of the market from Japan and Korean suppliers due to their cost advantage, proximity to the market and the China government’s support for building the supply chain. Among the four key LiB materials, Chinese producers held 46% global market share in electrolyte, 37% global market share in anode, 34% global market share in cathode and 15% global market share in separator in 1H14.

We also note that some Japanese and Korean battery material makers are shifting production to China or increasing the outsourced percentage to Chinese partners.

For instance, both LG Chemical and Samsung SDI are working with Chinese partners to build an EV LiB factory in Nanjing, and Xi’an, respectively by 2015; SK Innovation has also partnered with local firms to form a joint venture to produce battery packs for EV with an annual capacity of 200 MWh (capable of powering about 10k electric vehicles) by 2H14. We think some battery materials could have potential to be outsourced to Chinese producers due to economies of scale.
